Vaginal Tightening, is a surgical procedure which aims to correct a condition known as “lax vagina”.
The lower part of the vagina is surrounded by a muscular ring, which forms part of the pelvic-floor muscle. Most women are encouraged to carry out pelvic-floor exercises after childbirth to encourage the muscle to resume its normal tone. However, some or all of the muscle fibres may be torn and the normal constricting function may be lost.
The more common anterior repair is done for stress incontinence and prolapse of the uterus.

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
- Bleeding: This could happen from the incision line for a day or two. The tampon is removed the day after surgery only if bleeding has stopped.
- Pain: There will be soreness with sharp pain for a couple of days on coughing, lifting or any activity that caused muscles contraction.
- Urinary retention: Swelling in the vagina can affect the urethra and possibly cause the urinary outflow tube to obstruct.
- Sexual intercourse: You can have sexual intercourse only is soreness or discharge has settled, usually it takes about three weeks or four after surgery.
- Infection: Uncommon, but if it occurs and there is a discharge that persists for more than a few days contact your surgeon.
THE SURGERY
Vaginal tightening is a surgical procedure performed in a hospital under general anaesthesia. A vertical incision is made in the lining of the vagina, internally, and this lining layer is undermined to expose the underlying muscle layer.
The muscles are tightened with stitches taking great care not to damage the rectum, which is situated behind. Excess lining is removed and than the incision sutured with dissolvable stitches.
A small tampon of gauze is placed inside the vagina to reduce bleeding and swelling. The tampon helps the skin to stick to the muscles in their new position.
AFTER SURGERY
Many patients may experience discomfort due to sharp pain and soreness. This is a very sensitive part of your body so discomfort is natural, but you will be given instruction to keep the area clean and dry to avoid infection.
Sexual intercourse usually can be resumed about three to four weeks after surgery. However, if soreness and / or discharge has not settled do not resume the sexual activity because it can cause more pain and soreness. In some cases a vaginal lubricant may help initially until you feel better.
Avoid housekeeping work and lifting heavy weight for at least a week.
RESULT
If this surgery is done because of a lax vagina, the results are excellent. Patients report a more satisfactory love making and appreciated by their partners.
In cases of incontinence and prolapse uterus, patients report to have a better live without the stress and discomfort of the incontinence.
